As we mentioned in our post about the different types of harps, pedal harps, instead of using levers as a system, are made up of seven pedals in total (D, C, B on the left and E, F, G, A on the right), which allow for changing the pitch of the strings. With hands free, since the pedals are operated with the feet, both hands can be dedicated solely to controlling the harp strings.

Did you know… The first harp with a pedal mechanism was made by a Bavarian luthier in 1697. However, it wasn't until 1801 that Sebastien Erard patented the double-action pedal system in London.

Pedal harps can be played as part of a chamber ensemble, in an orchestra, or independently.

Regarding the dimensions of the pedal harp, we can define an average size of one meter and eighty centimeters in height, and more than one meter in width. The weight would be around 40 kilograms and it has a characteristic pear-shaped design. The neck of the harp stands out for its curved shape and includes more than 1000 pieces to form its mechanism.

On the other hand, the strings combine different colors (white, red, black, and blue) and their composition may vary depending on the tone (nylon, copper, steel, animal gut…)

As a general rule, pedal harps are diatonic instruments that incorporate the double-action pedal mechanism to make different chromatic and key changes.

Regarding technique, to play the pedal harp, the fingertips of the first four fingers are used (the pinky is not usually used), the palm of the hand, and the use of the feet to operate the pedals. The softness with which it is played and the use of techniques such as plucking are important, as even the harpist's skin can alter the sound. It is a truly delicate and technical instrument, so it is not surprising that it is one of the most difficult musical instruments to play.
