Did you know...? Although the double bass is considered by the vast majority to be the largest instrument in the bowed string family, this is not true. The truth is that there is a lesser-known and even larger musical instrument: the octobass (nearly 4 meters in size)
Double Bass Characteristics:
The double bass is a musical instrument belonging to the bowed string instrument group. It has a total of 4 strings that are tuned in ascending fourths (E, A, D, and G). However, there are also 3- and 5-string double basses.
The musician responsible for playing this musical instrument is called a double bassist.
The double bass stands out for its large dimensions and for being one of the chordophones that produce the lowest sound (only surpassed by the octobass)
Context and History of the Double Bass as a Musical Instrument:
The double bass was invented in Italy during the 16th century, as a descendant of another chordophone instrument: the violone.
However, it was not until the following century, the 17th, that it began to take its definitive shape and characteristics and be included in the orchestra for the first time.
By the 18th century, it began to gain popularity among musicians and audiences, after a period of stagnation as its large proportions hindered its development as a principal instrument.
From the 20th century to the present day, the double bass has established itself as a popular and prestigious instrument, used in ensembles and also as a soloist, with great recognition from orchestral and jazz musicians.
Parts of the Double Bass:
Among the many parts and pieces that any double bass has, the following stand out:
-
The body: It consists of the top and back and forms the instrument's soundbox. Inside this is the soundpost, which transmits sound from the top to the back. On the other hand, the bass bar is a small wooden bar that also serves to transmit sounds through the interior of the instrument.
-
The bridge: Responsible for transmitting the sound of the strings to the soundbox, a function similar to the soundpost and bass bar.
-
The neck: It starts at the body of the instrument and extends to the end (the scroll), encompassing many important elements such as the fingerboard, the pegbox, and the strings.
-
The fingerboard: An elongated piece that supports and houses the strings between the bridge and the endpin.
-
The pegbox: Houses the instrument's tuning pegs, which are used to tighten and loosen the strings (the standard is 4 strings).
-
F-holes or sound holes: Openings located on the sides of the body that emit the sound from the soundbox.
The sound of the double bass and the musical genres in which it is included:
The double bass is one of the transposing instruments, meaning that the notes that sound do not match those indicated on the staff, sounding an octave lower and avoiding the need to add ledger lines to the staff.
The double bass is not only large but also produces a very deep and powerful sound.
We can find double bass performances in different styles in addition to classical academic music or small chamber groups (where they predominate) such as in jazz music, traditional music, or 1950s rockabilly.
How the Double Bass Works:
The sound of the double bass is generated by the vibration and rotation of the instrument's strings using a bow to rub them. On the other hand, it is also possible to pluck the strings with the fingers instead of rubbing them, generally using the pizzicato technique.
Due to its enormous dimensions and weight, it must be played like a cello, keeping it resting on the floor. However, there is a difference, as the double bass's extra size compared to the cello makes it necessary to play it standing up instead of sitting down.
What type of double bass to buy?
Double basses are made with specific measurements to adapt to the size and technique of each musician. The most common and considerably sized model is the 3/4, however, there are even larger ones, 7/8 and 4/4.
